THE DIVINE AND SYMBOLIC DIANTHUS
THE DIANTHUS’S ROMAN HERITAGE
The Carnation [Dianthus] is a flower that is originally from the Mediterranean coast. She was already popular with the Romans. They made wreathes and fresh eau de toilette out of these flowers.
The Latin name of the Carnation is Dianthus that is derived from Dios (God) and Anthos (flower). In other words, the Dianthus is a divine flower!
WHAT SHAPE AND COLOUR WILL YOU CHOOSE?
The Dianthus comes in different colours: champagne, green, salmon pink, white and dark red are just a few examples.
Not only are there many different colours, the Dianthus can have different shapes as well. Will you choose the single flower or the spray variety?
The petals of the Dianthus are also very alluring. The rounded, serrated or fringed edges are real eye-catchers!
CARNATION ON CANVAS
The Dianthus can be a symbol of different things. It can be a symbol of religion, because it symbolises the Virgin Mary or the suffering of Christ.
Leonardo da Vinci has painted ‘Madonna of the Carnation’, in which the young Virgin Mary with baby Jesus on her lap holds up a Dianthus as a symbol of healing and a future reference to the passion of Christ.
Raphael, another very famous painter, has interpreted a version of this scene and included Dianthus flowers in this painting “Madonna of the Pinks’ as well. The Dianthus can also be a symbol of passion, longing and romance. In the 15th and 16th century, Renaissance painters used the Dianthus in engagement scenes to express these emotions.
Today, the Dianthus is still an appropriate gift in a relationship for demonstrating passionate love. A bouquet with these romantic, colourful flowers are a still-life you can’t keep your eyes off.
