On the evening of 5 December the Dutch celebrate a traditional holiday: the birthday of Sinterklaas (Saint Nicolas). In the weeks before this special night Sinterklaas makes unexpected appearances all over Holland. Also in OZ Export…

The ‘Sint’ (his nickname) supposedly lives in Spain throughout the whole year – much better than the North Pole, where Santa Claus resides, I would say – and once a year he sails to Holland on a steamboat loaded with gifts and candy for the good kids. He hangs around with his assistants, known as ‘Black Pete’ for a few weeks and prepares for the big 5 December gift night. In that period he tends to pay surprise visits here and there to make children happy.

So far so good, right?

We could, therefore, never suspect that last Tuesday we had the immense honour to be visited by Sinterklaas and his Black Pete who brought us a nice gift from rose grower Porta Nova. To make us aware of the special qualities of their Red Naomi’s Supra range we received a huge box with five filled puff pastry letters spelling the word S.U.P.R.A.

All we can say to this is: “Dank u, Sinterklaasje!” (“Thank you, dear Saint Nicolas!”).
