LUNAR NEW YEAR WITH FLOWERS

Kung Hei Fat Choi! On the 16th of February it is time for China to celebrate the New Year: Lunar New Year. During this festive day the Chinese come together to have a large meal and celebrate a new year. They do that in a floral red and gold setting, of which the Ilex and Forsythia are the most important products.

TRADITIONS DURING LUNAR NEW YEAR

This celebration is the largest migration of the year; some Chinese are travelling 24 hours to celebrate this day together with their family. Other facts about this tradition are:

  • In Hong Kong it is normal that the flower industry is open 24/7, however during this important tradition as an exception the companies close down for two or three days.
  • The Forsythia can be compared to our Christmas tree. Only the Chinese hang red envelops with money in the branches.
  • The Chinese have 12 symbols of Lunar. Next year it is the year of the Dog and it appears to be a bad sign for marriage.

FESTIVE RED FLOWERS WITH A GOLDEN TOUCH

The bright gold and intense red colours bring luck for the New Year. This means many Forsythia and Ilex branches! Normally, around this time of the year it is not possible to get Ilex branches. However, we have made special arrangements with our breeders to fill in the need of our customers. That’s why we are sending so many Ilex branches to China this week!
