FLOWER PITCH – CELOSIA BY FEIKO SONNEVELD

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL UNKNOWN FLOWER

Usually, Flower Pitches at OZ Export start with a short introduction of the grower who is visiting OZ Export. Feiko Sonneveld felt the need to start emphasizing the place of Celosia in the current flower spectrum.

CELOSIA CRISTATA

There are some quite different varieties of Celosia, like Cristata, Plumosa and Argenta. Feiko Sonneveld cultivates the Cristata varieties, also known as “cockscomb”. The somewhat strange brain-like shape flowers draw the attention, but are still quite unknown to the big consuming audience.

We think that Celosia can use a little attention. Surely one good reason for Feiko to stand before our full sales staff and explain what is so great about Celosia’s and why and how we should use more Celosia’s. After half an hour all was clear: Celosia definitely deserves more attention.

Celosia is often seen as a typical bouquet flower. It is the eyecatcher in any bouquet big or small. But did you ever try Celosia as a monobunch? Surely worth an effort, because also as a single bunch, either one colour or mixed, Celosias look great on a table.

THE PERFECT CUTTING STAGE

Feiko clearly takes his time to explain how he harvests his flowers. It is very important for him to get across one important message: do not wait too long cutting. It may look like the flower head is bigger, but it will bring disbalance to the stem who can never get enough nutrition to the flowers and as a result the flower head will break easily, leaving the customer disappointed. That is why Sonneveld has invested a great deal of time finding out the perfect cutting stage to get the best combination of strong stem and big flower.

WITH OR WITHOUT LEAVES?

Another point of interest is the leaves. Always difficult issue, because “the leaves are the lungs of the flower”, Feiko explains. They will exhaust after a while when they have done their work. However, despite that they will get weaker and maybe even yellowish in time they are of superimportance for the flower who extracts power from these leaves. The advise is to understand that on Celosia, just like with Sunflowers, the leaves are merely there for empowering the flowers. Cut the leaves only when you intend to use the flower, like in a bouquet or a decorative monobunch. That is soon enough.
